Yesterday, the Anti-Defamation League officially designated Pepe the Frog as a hate symbol.
Pepe had been an internet meme for a decade, even being used by Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry, before being “reclaimed” by alt-right losers on the likes of Reddit and 4Chan in the past few years. The frog was frequently seen with neo-Nazi garb, and had even been posted on social media by both Donald Trump and his son, Donald Trump, Jr.
Here at HashtagGif, we celebrate, not denigrate. We deplore any kind of racism, but also deplore any negative use of cartoon frogs.
Everybody loves cartoon frogs. Frogs are easily the best animated animal. They are charismatic and approachable, yet sneakily suave. Much like frogs can breathe both in and out of water, cartoon frogs can be both trusted friends and casanovas, even nefarious yet likable.

Mister Toad was the town squire from the classic novel The Wind in the Willows and the Disney film adaptation The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Mr. Toad is original “lovable rogue”, influencing anti-heroes from Han Solo to Captain Jack Sparrow. Except he is better than all of these people because he is a frog.
