Bodegas are an inherently New York institution – find yourself in the right neighborhood and you’ll see three – four – five bodegas on one block. Bodegas oprovide everyday goods from milk and eggs to shady male vitality pills and pirated cigarettes. We love bodegas and will be sad when the last one in East New York is replaced by a Duane Reade in 2030 because hipsters don’t have souls.
One of the defining characteristics of the bodega is the bodega cat that takes residence in the neighborhood joint – usually in amusing places like the snack section or the overhead area with paper towels. The Instagram account @bodegacatsofinstagram tracks photos of the best bodega cats.
